Some Epistemic Benets of Action: Tetris, a Case Study
نویسندگان
چکیده
We present data and argument to show that in Tetris|a real-time interactive video game|certain cognitive and perceptual problems are more quickly, easily, and reliably solved by performing actions in the world rather than by performing computational actions in the head alone. We have found that some translations and rotations are best understood as using the world to improve cognition. They are not being used to implement a plan, or to implement a reaction. To substantiate our position we have implemented a computational laboratory that lets us record keystrokes and game situations, as well as allows us to dynamically create situations. Using the data of over 30 subjects playing 6 games, tachistoscopic tests of some of these subjects, and results from our own successful e orts at building expert systems to play Tetris, we show why knowing how to use one's environment to enhance speed and robustness are important components in skilled play.

متن کاملThe Benefits of Epistemic Action Outweigh the Costs
Epistemic actions are physical actions people take to simplify internal problem solving rather than to move closer to an external goal. When playing the video game Tetris, for instance, experts routinely rotate falling shapes more than is strictly needed to place the shapes. Maglio and Kirsh (Kirsh & Maglio, 1994; Maglio, 1995) proposed that such actions might serve the purpose of priming memor...
متن کاملEpistemic Action Increases With Skill
On most accounts of expertise, as agents increase their skill, they are assumed to make fewer mistakes and to take fewer redundant or backtracking actions. Contrary to such accounts, in this paper we present data collected from people learning to play the videogame Tetris which show that as skill increases, the proportion of game actions that are later undone by backtracking also increases. Neve...

Could androids use movements to build relationships? For people, relationships are created with the help of behaviour-shaping norms, which infants begin to discover andmanipulate by the thirdmonth. To build relationships, machines can also learn to exploit human reactions in real-time decision-making. In the video gameTetris, for example, affect co-opts computer-generated patterns to simplify cog...
